The Elements

The Wiccan belief is that the universe is divided into five separate elements; earth, air, fire, water and spirit. These elements are honoured from their rawest to their most complex forms and spirit is seen as the connector, weaving of these four elements together – joining in them in different ways and in different amounts to create life.

North - Earth - Green
East - Air - Yellow
South - Fire- Red
West - Water - Blue
Spirit - Purple

Elements Invocation:
Air: In the East, the element of air, communication, reason and memory, our first breath and our last, you are honoured in the circle. Be present at our rites and bring to this circle your gifts of clarity, teaching, learning and understanding. Hail and welcome!
Fire: In the South, the element of fire, inspiration, passion and courage, the spark that ignited our existence, you are honoured in the circle. Be present at our rites and bring to this circle your gifts of willpower, daring and creativity. Hail and welcome!
Water: In the West, the element of water, intuition, dreams and emotions, seas, rain, river and the primordial waters of birth, you are honoured in this circle. Be present at our rites and bring to this circle your gifts of love, balance and healing. Hail and welcome!
Earth: In the north, the element of Earth, fertility, stability, and practicality, rock, crystal, soil, bones and body, you are honoured in this circle. Be present at our rites and bring to this circle your gifts of sheltered protection and manifestation. Hail and welcome!

The Pentacle:
The pentacle is the simplest symbol of the elements, drawing all five points together in the sign of a 5 pointed star. Pentacles can be worn as forms of jewellery and Wiccans believe that they also offer protection. The pentagram is also a symbol of this as well, the difference being that the 5 pointed star is enclosed in a circle, usually in the form of a tile or object and placed on the altar as a symbol of the 5 elements or used as a symbol for the element of earth.

Symbolic use of the Elements:
Items placed on an altar usually signify the elements in balance or can be the focus of a spell or ritual to invoke the strength of that element. For example, the element of of fire may be invoked to give us the strength and courage to deal with a certain situation. An example of altar objects and their elemental significance are listed below:

Air- Wand
Fire- Athame
Water - Chalice
Earth - Pentacle
Spirit - Threads/Cords
